The Maine Wilderness Guides Organization (MWGO) is a community of guides from across Maine committed to leading safe, well-organized, enriching, and enjoyable outdoor experiences.
Established in 2004 by a collective of conservation-oriented guides and camp owners, MWGO is dedicated to preserving the ecosystems critical for guiding activities, upholding the traditional expertise of Maine guides, and enhancing the prestige of the guiding community by committing to superior training standards and advanced first aid capabilities beyond those required by the State of Maine.
As the role of a guide has evolved, MWGO has broadened its view of guiding to encompass more than just the standard Registered Maine Guide activities – for instance, our membership includes guides leading rock climbing, day hikes, nature interpretation walks, forest therapy, and volunteer-led excursions. Guides in these areas often share the same commitment to conserving natural resources, maintaining high professional standards, and fostering a community spirit that characterizes the Maine guide community.
